Event Report for Inaugural Symposium
Global Nursing Research Center (GNRC)
The Graduate School of Medicine, The University of Tokyo
The Inaugural Symposium of the GNRC, The University of Tokyo, was held in October 11, approximately six months following the establishment of the GNRC on April 1, 2017.
Inaugural Symposium
The symposium, which started at 2:00 pm, began with a greeting by the Dean of the Graduate School of Medicine, The University of Tokyo, Kohei Miyazono, who is also a member of the operations committee. It was followed by congratulatory speeches, including words by Mr. Masahiro Ishida, a member of the House of Councilors of the Diet, Ms. Shinobu Saito, Senior Specialist for Nursing Education in the Medical Education Division of the Higher Education Bureau, Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, and Dr. Yayoi Kamakura, the Chair of the Japan Academy of Nursing Science.

Next, a video message "Global Nursing Research Center: A New Endeavor for Advancing Nursing Research and Improving Health Outcomes" created by Dr. Patricia A. Grady, Director of the National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR), USA, was viewed and the Director of the GNRC, Hiromi Sanada presented 'Upon the Establishment of the Global Nursing Research Center.' Following that Associate Professor Makoto Oe gave a speech entitled an "Introduction of the Division of Care Innovation," and Vice Director Noriko Yamamoto-Mitani offered an "Introduction of the Division of Nursing Systems." The presentations were given in English because one of the GNRC's missions is Globalization.

After that, Postdoctoral Fellow Mayu Fukuda, Postdoctoral Fellow Mariko Sakka, and Assistant Professor Miasako Dai, Kanazawa University, each presented their research as of means of introducing the activities of young researchers who are involved in or related to the GNRC. Each of them received comments on their work by Prof. Claudia Kam Yuk Lai, Honorary Professor & Founding Director, Centre for Gerontological Nursing (CGN), The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and Professor Christine Moffatt, CBE, Professor of Clinical Nursing Research, University of Nottingham.

Next, Professor Claudia Kam Yuk Lai, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University offered a lecture entitled "The Development of the Centre for Gerontological Nursing and Fostering Young Researchers for a Brave 'New' World," and was given a letter of appreciation by Vice Director Yamamoto-Mitani. Following Professor Lai's remarks, Professor Christine Moffatt, University of Nottingham, spoke on "Using Quantitative and Qualitative Research Methods in Developing Lymphoedema Globally," and was given a letter of appreciation by Director Sanada.

Finally, Vice Director, Kiyoko Kamibeppu, gave the closing address.

Social Gathering

After the symposium, a social gathering was held. It began at 6:00 pm with a welcome address by Vice Director Kamibeppu, Head of School of Health Science and Nursing, who also provided an introduction of the purpose and roles of each division of the GNRC, Then, additional remarks were presented by Vice-Dean Tatsuya Yamasoba, along with congratulatory addresses by President Kayoko Shimizu of the Japan Visiting Nursing Foundation and Ms. Mitsuko Ishi, a member of the House of Councilors of the Diet. Lastly Vice President Reiko Kikuchi of the Japanese Nursing Association spoke on behalf of the President Toshiko Fukui.

Next, a toast was offered by Director Chieko Komiyama, Nursing Department, The University of Tokyo Hospital, and the guests were allowed time for chatting, and listening to the division introductions. Then, Professor Hiroshi Yasuhara, a member of the operations committee gave the closing remarks, and the GNRC Inaugural Symposium came to a successful conclusion.
