Polish-Up Opportunity - Research Capability & Mindset -
for Other Universities’ Young Researchers @GNRC
Case 3: Misako Dai, PhD, RN
Chance to have collaborative research with GNRC.
As a member of the faculty staff, I had explored ways to accomplish high-quality research, and because of that I grasped the value of the GNRC, especially because it accepts other universities’ researchers. It was decided that I would undertake training on a regular basis in one year based on my boss’s cooperation. The GNRC helped me to start my research, which I had been thinking about for many years. My Dream as a faculty staff, as a young researcher.
I, as an educator, believe students are diamonds in the rough. When they can stretch their research capabilities and develop their mindsets, they will be really beautiful, and I hope they will become global leaders in the future. As a researcher, I hope my research will help lymphedema patients throughout society. So, I need to improve my research capabilities and mindset so I can achieve the global standard. I believe this will also contribute to the development of students in nursing and support of lymphedema patients.
About your research.
Lymphoedema management, the field in which I specialize, has an important role in preventing cellulitis and exacerbation of edema. Therefore, I have researched mainly about the effectiveness verification of new care for postoperative lymphoedema patients, and the establishment of a new evaluation method using an ultrasound device. The verification showed that a declining edema rate for the patients can be elevated by adding vibration to standard care. We are currently applying for a patent on a summer elastic stocking to suit patient needs, which was be developed through academic-industrial cooperation. It will be released in FY 2018. The establishment of an evaluation method brought visualization analysis of the effect of manual lymphatic drainage. The visualization helps improve the patients’ motivation for the care. Currently I’m working to make clear the structure and the features of the local immunization system, focusing on the dermis/subcutaneous tissue in cellulitis, by adopting a biological method.
What does the GNRC opportunity offer you in terms of your research life as a faculty staff?
The biggest one is what I could polished up my research mindset. I learned from the GNRC the appropriate mindset — cooperate with each other for the best results and spare no efforts to ensure success. I could start a new research project that I had been thinking about for a long time by working with GNRC researchers who had this research mindset. This meant significant progress for me.
Message to the other universities’ young researchers from Misako.
‘Are you stuck in your research? If you don’t know how to start it, then begin by asking someone for advice. And the GNRC option would certainly be the best for finding a solution.’
