On Mar. 10th,2022, we held the second lecture of the “Nursing Lectures Series: From Experts to Novices.” The online lecture entitled “Black Gold: The Roles of Cultural Affirmation, Autonomy Support and Perceived Competence in Building a Successful Career in Nursing Research” was given by Dr. LaRon E. Nelson, the Associate Dean for Global Affairs and Planetary Health and the Independence Foundation Professor and Associate Professor of Nursing, Yale School of Nursing, Yale university, USA. They discussed the concepts of social identity and cultural uniqueness, and their role in building a research career in nursing. About 50 participants from Japan and other countries attended the lecture. Dr. Nelson shared his experience as a member of the black community in the USA, his motivations, and strategies to overcome struggles he met throughout his career. The story about a teacher who trusted and encouraged him to believe in his potential, which eventually led him to his present profession inspired us all and made us realize that each of us need such a teacher and that we can be one for somebody.
